The Watchers on the Fence

A pigeon on a fence, and yet a sentinel. Behind them the sky opens — violet, rose and gold — and the light breaks in one corner as though a door has been left ajar between worlds.

Pigeons are often dismissed as common, even as pests, but those who watch them know better. They are perimeter guardians. They continue to monitor the street, the rooftop, the garden, the quiet corner that everyone else has forgotten. They do not need to be thanked. They simply stay, turning their head to catch every shift of light, every unfamiliar sound, every soul passing through.

This one sits on a wooden fence with the sky behind them, and the shine on their feathers is not ordinary. It is the glow of being looked after — fed, sheltered, allowed to live without threat. When we treat a pigeon with kindness instead of aggression, we are not only helping the bird; we are feeding our own karma, softening the edge between ourselves and the rest of nature.

Around them, other pigeons gather in spirit — the watchers watching the watcher — a council of angels in feathered form, making sure this guardian is safe in return. Nothing is alone here. Everything is reciprocal.
